Critical Gulf Studies Working Group

A UAE-based research community producing and questioning knowledge on the Gulf.

About the Working Group

Welcome to the page of the Critical Gulf Studies Working Group! We are a group of academic and non-academic scholars in the UAE who conduct critical, interdisciplinary research on the Gulf region. Our work addresses the Gulf through the lens of anthropology, history, sociology, politics, archaeology, the arts, and more.

We are also invested in reflecting on our own positionalities and the broader conditions under which knowledge about the region is produced, circulated, and contested.

The group meets on a monthly basis to discuss works-in-progress by members, exchange feedback, and host thematic conversations on emerging questions in Gulf scholarship. We welcome expressions of interest from researchers, graduate students, and practitioners whose interests align with the group’s orientation. If you would like to join or learn more, please get in touch using the contact form below.
